i just bevel the edge of the plastic i'm using for the overlay. helps soften the edge.
buy 3/4" wood and 3/4" t-moulding.

I thought that the width of the wood + plastic = t-moulding. Doesn't the t-moulding cover the plexi?

No. I mean, 3/4" plywood isn't actually 3/4" but 3/4" MDF is but either way, wood/MDF + lexan/plexiglass ≠ 3/4".
You should offset the slot for the t-molding (to cover the lexan/plexiglass) and then bevel the bottom of the MDF/wood panel. No one will be able to tell.

A visual to elaborate.
