R3play Expo - Blackpool 6/7 Nov 2010 - Reviews and comments!
Turnarcades:
From what I've been reading, it's pretty much definitely on for next year. We're working on new prototypes and demo cabinets for our new showroom, so we'll have a lot more prepared for next year's show. With any luck, we'll have a full-size virtual pinball table, pc and console-based racing cabinets, upright console-based cabinets and a few Bar-tops to bring for a tournament I've got in mind.

It broke down right at the end of the first day and I attributed it to overheating. But it was the U360 PCB breaking where the USB lead plugs in. It was completely my own fault as it was my bad design inside which caused it. Basically the USB socket where the lead plugs in was being pushed against every time it was played on. This put great strain on the pins on the PCB and they eventually gave way. I only discovered it once I got the cab home and investigated further. All fixed now though. Tongue

I was totally impressed with the U360. The control on such a small cab was really good, so much so I want to add them in my future builds. Maybe Andy from Ultimarc could have a stand at next year's show? Also maybe could we have vendors that took card payments? Cash only is great but no protection if the gear you are buying ends up not working later on. That console vendor had good prices for the older kit, but..... ;D

We thought about having a stand at the Northampton show last year but didnt. We were glad we didnt as it would have been largely a waste of time because we would not really have fitted in with the type of event it was.
Thats one of the reasons we didnt take one at the Blackpool show but seeing the show I think we are getting closer as it was such an impressive event. Maybe next year.
Craig mentioned an anti-Mame feeling amongst some other people. To be honest I thought this would happen and not surprised at all. This will always be a problem with the nature of Mame. I think if I were exhibiting cabinets I would stick with running PC games. After all its the cabinet thats being shown not Mame.
Several years ago at ATE (which admittedly is a trade show), one of our customers had a stand and I was rather worried to see him running Mame in his tabletops. I spoke to him later and sure enough the people on some of the other stands went ballistic when they found out and basically closed him down with threats of legal action. He is no longer in the business. That was an extreme example and unlikely to happen to that extent at the type of enthusiast show that R3Play is.

I am of the belief, that your products would be best shown on cabinets running on mainboards than Mame. You would be demonstrating your controllers than the Mame cabinet side of things. You could always have a PC running Legal classics. No disrespect to Craig, but I agree Mame belongs at home and not in the wild. Unfortunately not many people would be interested in one game home cabinets, unless it was a restoration job like Tron or StarWars.
