Creeper's arcade cabinet (work in progress)
« on: July 24, 2010, 10:11:29 pm »
Hey everyone, just wanted to post a few pictures of my cabinet, it's coming along pretty well. It's my first build, but hopefully not last. Hit me with any questions or comments!

Test fit for my D9800, fits like a glove (*phew*)

+1 Are the sides woodgrain as well? Can't really tell in the pics.

And what's on that wall behind there? Is that some kind of bas relief fossil sculpture? Looks pretty cool.

Nice start on your cab.   Would like to know more about what finish you are using on the wood.  Looks great.  :applaud: :applaud:

Yea, the whole thing is going to be black/wood grain. The wood is just 3/4" birch ply with 3 coats of black paint and 3 coats semi gloss varnish. (sand every coat!) Anything that's wood grain is 2 coats stain and 3 coats varnish. (sides, speaker grill, cp panel)

The wall behind is cnc'd styrofoam of a velociraptor skeleton.

Thanks for the kind words, I'll post more updates soon!

Very nice ... I am also curious on the stain..you got that birch veneer looking Sweeet!  :applaud:
What sort of grommets are those? Did you route those speaker grills?

PS- Love that Styro-saur! where did you get that?

The stain is just Minwax brand and the color is 'jacobean'. The pre-stain conditioner and polyurethane varnish are also Minwax.

The speaker grill was laser cut and I made the fossil wall (helped make).

I'm building this cabinet at my work, we CNC all sorts of crazy things for film and tv.

Fantastic work on that CP. One of the best examples of a woodgrain cp I've seen. The inlay in great!

Would it sound stupid if I asked you how you got your lines so straight?  Was this all routed on the CNC machine?

Hi Rick
Sure is CNC.  You cannot do that type of CP work without access to great equipment.

Thanks guys.

Yea, this was all done with CNC tables, except for the finer details such as the 1/8" birch overlay pieces, those were CNC laser cut. Each metal (diabond) letter was filed down by hand to fit snug. A router table alone can't match the cut of a laser.

Hopefully I'll have something else to show soon, the two key pieces I still have to do are the marquee and keyboard drawer.

It's kind of 'faux' metal. Basically black plastic sintra with a thin metal laminate. Diabond, great stuff.

Thanks a lot. No more pictures right now, the back edge needs to be filed down a bit and then it will get some sort of polish. Once it's mounted on the cp box I'll snap a few more pictures and post em.

So I've started doing the wiring. I've got an iPac4 and a tonne of Happ buttons. I'm using 22 gauge for the grounds, does anyone see a problem with that?

you should be ok with the 22 gauge. though I feel 20 gauge is a bit more proper.
Is the wire stranded, I hope?

Alright, somewhat of an update. It's totally playable now, its running like a dream. Had no problems with the wiring and the ipac, everything worked first try.

There are 3 things left to do: The marquee (laser engraved layered plexi side lit with blue LED's), key board drawer, and get a piece of glass cut to go over the bezel and monitor. Other than that, it's practically done. Oh, and I'm eventually going to swap the white player start buttons for black ones, it should make the CP look a bit better.

Here's some photos, share your thoughts.

Thanks a lot guys.

A few weekends ago I had about 30 or 40 people over at my place and the arcade never had a moments rest. The big games of the night were Turtles in Time, X-men, Samurai Shodown V, Street Fighter II, Street Fighter III, Metal Slug 5, Hang Time...so on. It was awesome, by 2 in the morning most people were loaded and absolutely hammering on the buttons, to the point where I was mildly concerned. When morning dawned and the dust settled I gave it a Windex and assessed the damage. Not a scratch, the thing is built like a tank.

This has been an incredibly fun project and for all the people sitting on the fence trying to decide whether or not to jump in and build their own, do it. That is if you have the time, space, money, resources and motivation.

Please post a picture of your marquee lit up when you get it done!  I am thinking about going the edge-lit marquee route too...

yeah, that is fantastic.  you did great.  congrats.  yeah i want to get some black player buttons.  but the only place i found that sold them is in the UK.  and im not gonna pay for over seas shipping on two items. heh.

chris.

Hey, where did you find the black player start buttons? I remember seeing them quite a while ago and now I can't remember where that was..

Morning, sorry i did not respond sooner.  i missed it.  i need to learn to subscribe to threads.  at any rate, i still need two of these my self.  i prefer all black system buttons, the white buttons just clash  on the top row!!

i do not remember if this was the original web-page i found the black player 1 and play 2 buttons.
they have them listed as happ's so im surprised iv not seen any state size.

here is the url:

sounds good.  just spent 20 bucks on his webpage.  two sets of black player buttons and misc.  will use one set for my current cab, and the other on a bartop in the future.

p.s

remind me not to try and order anything when im tired.. looks like i ordered 1 player black button and two 2 player buttons.. i needed two of each. laughs.. looks like il be ordering from lizzard one more time down the road when i start on my bar top!!  probably get one of his sticks then to justify shipping.

How did I miss this one? This looks amazing.  :applaud:

Just to throw out another option for the black player buttons: I ordered plain black buttons and then applied vinyl decals from Pongo. Might not be cost effective if all you want is the black player buttons, but definitely worth a look if you want to label other buttons as well.
