Stern's Timing With New Machines

(1/2) > >>

JeepMonkey:
Why doesn't Stern put new movie themed machines on the market when the movie is in theaters?  I would think that would only bring more plays for the ops.

IIRC, TDK wasn't released to the public until after the movie was out of theaters, not sure about Iron Man.  Avatar didn't make it either.

Years ago when I was a kid (I know, different times) one way to kill time waiting for a movie to start was to play some of the pins/vids/claw machines in the lobby.

Jeff AMN:
Yeah, move companies are restricting release dates for this stuff. Aside from that though, Stern is done taking gambles on licenses that haven't proven themselves first. Imagine if they had created Avatar, put all that money into designing it, and then the movie flops. It would make the machine very undesirable to both the home and operator market. Now that it's a proven hit franchise, they can put the machine out and it should draw some interest with the re-release and the eventual sequel.

was the same dealio with the terminator 2 pinball machine... from www.ipdb.org

--- Quote ---Reportedly, due to pre-release secrecy around the Robert Patrick 'liquid metal' T-1000 character and the chance the game could be released prior to the film, the T-1000 character was not shown in the cabinet, playfield, and backglass artwork, with the exception of a small picture of actor Robert Patrick on a light shield. With the game still in development, by the time the DMD programming was finalizing (which happens after the artwork), the liquid T-1000 was already public knowledge, which allowed the character to be included in the display animation. When a player gets an extra ball, the DMD graphic stating to shoot again is a clip of the T-1000 opening a door and getting shot by Arnie with a shotgun.

Iron man was released in time.  I'm surprised they are not waiting for the second Avatar movie to come out as Stern usually waits for a second or third movie before they proceed with a title.

What?  Stern designs? Stern puts money into a machine?  Har Har.

I believe I read that Steve Ritchie had started on it, and then it was cut ($$$).

They probably are scrambling to dig up anything that could possibly convince the
money men to drop any more cash into a sinking ship.   That and the fact that
they probably dont even have a pinball table designer anymore.  Probably gona take
the unfinished whitewood, and produce it as-is... hoping people will overlook the
many flaws/problems, merely because of the movie success.

The whole idea is pathetic really.  The thing that made Avatar a success, was
that it was 3D, and the beauty of their world... Which Stern will never put
enough money into re-producing to be anywhere near convincing/beautiful.

(The poorly colored inkjet clippings will be hideous)

The movie does not have the typical taglines that stand out, so sound-clips
will be pretty bad... and not really motivating at all.

The theme is still better than some of their crappy choices. But does not mean
people will go and drop big money on a cruddy, stripped down, generic,
$4 thousand dollar, poorly designed toy.  Nor put quarters into it passing by.

 Very sad...
