They do? Seems to me, that except on specific cabel channels, they get bleeped all the *bleeping* time.
PS: I don't think the ability to turn the filter off at a personal level was there when I joined this site years ago. That's why I was surprised.

Sorry, I'm from the Netherlands. I don't think there is anything they cannot say on TV here. Seeing shows like South Park and some American stand up comedians, I assumed that it was allowed in the US by now too.
Or is the reason that they swear so much exactly because it isn't allowed on TV. That it's still a "cool" "rebellious" thing to do?

There's probably a bunch of that involved. Same with nudity. Example shampoo commercials in Germany show from the waist up. Here in the states it's from the neck up. However, intense violence is shown on prime time all the time. I think our priorities are skewed...

Amen brother.
Ah damn it...now I brought up religion.... ::)

I think you are partially correct on the BLEEP. They could just mute out the offensive language on TV, however they use the BLEEP as it is almost always louder than the dialouge to draw attention to it. Guess they are hoping that some one not really pay attention will hear the BLEEP, become intrigued and then start paying attention...and then stay tuned in for the commercials.

P.S. - At least the censor here is entertaining. Can you imagine if TV used sound bites to insert instead of the BLEEP? How funny would it be to hear on prime time "Why you little son of a ---smurfette---! Why I oughta kick your little mother ---smurfing--- ass!?"
