question about speaker position?

So I'm working off Knievel's woody build

and this is what my friend said (the guy who's helping me build the cabinet), It's not an

"putting the speakers in the top firing down to the floor is awful in terms of sound quality for an adult sized person (because the sound comes at you almost 90 degrees from the forward axis of the speaker), but it does appear to be the arcade norm. Having them fire towards you from the marquee panel would be much better, but i understand you might not like that. just something to think about. i suggest we dismantle the subwoofer and install it in the top, between the other two speakers. it can fire downwards regardless of how the left and right speakers are placed."

Opinon's thoughts? Any other ideas of where to place the speakers?

I angled my monitor panel down and added a panel between the monitor and marquee for the speakers.  So they're pointing right at the player.

I left the subwoofer out because the cheap mains I'm using are already way better than a classic cabinet needs.

Cool, I want to keep the subwoofer in.. I think he suggested a good spot for the subwoofer, but I'm just worried that the speakers are going to look weird if they are on the marquee area (and would mean the marque will not cover the whole area and needs to slide in from the top.

I have my speakers behind the marquee and facing outward. I decided to do that partly because it let me avoid making speaker holes and partly because I plan on putting jukebox software on it and I think having the speakers facing the floor would likely suck for that. Not very authentic, but it sounds "normal" to me when playing games, and should be better for sending the sound out into the room for when I play music on it.

Oh nice, and does the fact that your speakers are behind the marquee affect the clarity of the sounds? I don't want it to sound muffled (as if they were behind a wall or something.
