Virtual Boy anyone?
« on: May 24, 2010, 05:19:16 pm »
Okay, so many people may not care....

but there is a working virtual boy emulator now, and you can set it up to be only in red and black (but you can leave it as is if you have some old school 3d glasses. It runs most games really well. Everyone will be thrilled when you have their favorite portable on your cab, trust me  :P

I wrote up a short tutorial on my blog if you're interested

You mean the red/blue lens glasses?

I would make some smart-alek remark like:

"Great now all we need is a _______ emulator and we are all set!"

The problem is I can't think of anything as comparably awful as the virtual boy.  ;)

Can't wait to add this to maximus arcade this week.  Thanks for the tutorial!  Have you made artwork for Maximus Arcade yet?

uhhmmm.. unfortunately I wasn't able to find a clean picture of the virtual buy that wouldn't require too much time to fix up.

I just used this pic, I also couldn't find a logo.. i'm not too good at photoshop, so I'm not too sure how to fix the logo I have up.  Here are the pics I used. I'm also looking for the image that spacegoogie use for his mame in his skin, might you know where I can find that?

Thanks!  I may try to make my own, I think I may have found a clean picture to edit.  If I do, I'll post the pics here.

And I don't think I have the mame pic spacegoogie uses.  I use this one:http://www.cadred.net/personal/mame.png

I had another one with the blur effect and some different games, but I forget where I got it.  If you need it, I'm sure I can get that other one too.

N-Gage.

Come on. you cannot compared the early cellphone/console combo with the virtual boy.

The N-Gage had some good titles, was playable. the only downside was the cost, and the low-ergonomics of the phone capability. The 2nd version was already a bit better.

Have you ever played the real Virtual Boy?

After about half an hour on Virtual Tennis, I still could not return the ball. The whole machine was not that great, the graphics was even worst the that old monochrome gameboy, and it had no titles.

I played NES emulation on my N-Gage, you could play 2-player contra with 2 wirelessly linked N-Gage. That was awesome. Try that on the virtual boy!

The V-boy is more of a collectible then a successfull videogame console. Apparently people in the virtual 3D hobby like the machine itself, but its gameplay sucked big time, I think due to limited capability.

I might be wrong. I never studied the V-boy hardware.

uh.... seriously.  Don't mean to be rude, but I don't really care which is better.  I just know my brother bought the virtual boy, and he regreted it, so it's just funny to have.

Wario land was good though

Although not authentic to do it this way, I wonder if editing the colors could make it black and white?

I mean the red is authentic, but darn hard to play for a while.  Still glad I have it in my cab.  I bought my virtual boy for like 20 bucks new, after no one bought them, and I enjoyed mine considering I paid so little for it.  The boxing game was pretty fun.

first time i saw your site by the way - good job. make a note on the VBoy page though.. you make it sound like you have to config that way. i was confused about how to make it fullscreen (the config file is SO long), and the second post here helped: http://www.yellowdog-board.com/viewtopic.php?t=3549
got it set up fine now

red/blue is still the best 'virtual reality' ever. new life for virtual boy :)

thanks for the info! I added it to the guide, although I could have sworn I just edited one thing to make it fullscreen.. hmm oh well. For those using maximus I think this command "-fs 1 %file" accomplishes that

i had to specify my res. for sure, since by default it went to 800x600, which my monitor can't handle.

and i edited the stretching. virtual boy is 384x224, so i stretch by 1.6 to make it about 640 wide.

but for anyone of thinking of playing this with a J-pac, like it says at http://mednafen.sourceforge.net you will experience some latency. trying to nudge my ship in Space Invaders, my stick was already back at centre before the thing moved. makes the game pretty damn hard. not such a big deal in Wario World, which i also tried.

not sure how this could possibly be resolved. wonder how much difference a joystick emulator would make.

ETA: nevermind.. it actually plays better on my laptop (with keyboard). my cab system just isn't very powerful!

Bad ideas for consoles time?!?!

SEGA NOMAD!

6 AA batteries, plays full sized Genesis carts. Crappy screen on it (worse than Sega Game Gear!), batteries last about half an hour.

Any other contenders?

First off, where there even more than like 6 games for the virtual boy? Is it even worth the effort for that few?

Dillon,
That was Segas attempt to rip off the Turbo Grafix Express. The Turbo Express played all the standard TG16 carts, which was, admittedly, far easier as their carts were so small. More like cards really. While the nomad was a good idea, it was just poorly executed, mostly due to the technology of the time.

i'm not sure if this will work for everyon.. but I didn't have to edit the screen size or make it full screen, I just pressed alt+enter to make it full screen and exited.  Whenever I start a game now it starts in fullscreen.
