Competition #44 is '99: The Last War

Briefly. I picked more of the same. Meaning basicly Astro Blasters, with updated graphics. I picked this game because it's the only other game besides "Knuckle Joe" I was able to complete on 1 credit in arcade settings. Not only did I complete this game, I managed to do that with shield button disabled! Local arcades had it in a cab that only had one button. I suspected that there wa something wrong as at the end of every level, bar at the bottom (which was barely visible, because monitor was bigger than the bezel) would go down to zero while I would always get bonus points and then bar would get refilled. I wasn't able to prove my theory of missing 2nd button untill years later, thx of course to MAME.
I believe upon completion game just goes back to 1st screen (can't confirm as I never get time to finish it, even with unlimited credits) Just found out that there is a cheat in dip switches, so I quickly played to the end of the game and found out that the game does not start over. Didn't remember that part as I finished the game only maybe couple of times, that's why I had doubt as to what happens for sure.

'99: The Last War That's how I know this game, but since mame lists Son of Phoenix as a parent rom, then lets use that.

ROMSet: sonofphx

(my mame ver) DEFAULT DIP Switch Settings:

Lives: 3

Bonus Life: Every 50K

All DIP switches: OFF

Dificulty: NORMAL

----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Sunday June 6th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2010.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

Good luck!

OK, so I missed Astro Blaster.  Darn.

Never played much of Son of Phoenix--definitely quirky, like its father.  Not a big fan, but it has some surprises.

My final death was super cheap--I was on the left side of the screen & a bullet came from a baddie off of that left side--no time to dodge.  Weak! :hissy:

Without thread derailment, I had a very good excuse.  I was in Korea & Japan for 2.5 weeks.  Went to so many arcades in Japan.  Apart from being deafeningly loud, they were pure joy.  Except for some of the newer games with non-standard cabinets, most games were fighters & SHMUPs.  I played a whoooole lotta new SHMUPs, even one with a "SHMUPs Skill Test" mode!

So, I've got my SHMUP game on!

-Jason

PS--played a couple of Astro Blaster games last night before Son of Phoenix--got only ~10k.  Those randomly-moving aliens are a bear!

Can we make a novice category (i.e. people who have never won a high score yet?).  Some of us like playing but suck too bad!  :D

Maybe like a little league for us noobs, and the rest of you can stay in the majors?

It's still fun to play along, but Ive never even got close enough to any of you guys to bother posting...  I guess I need more play time!

These competitions have been won by plenty of "noobs", as you put it. The ones that win over and over sometimes are the only people to make an effort. We've mostly kept the pros out.

There's no need for another competition thread.

I agree, wasnt looking to start another one.  It was just an idea as it felt like the same people always win, and I figured some of the players were more pro than most.   I'll just have to try harder.

And as I mentioned on the other thread, I'm sure that those who win are open to suggestions from others on what to play next... If I won on a regular basis, I'd want to bring my game to other people's home court...

Several times people have chosen games because other people were requesting them. After winning the Ghouls 'n' Ghosts comp, I chose Ms Pac-man w/Speed chip because DeLuSioNal29 wanted it and no one would pick it.

I already thought this competition was for amateurs...?

While I do have several wins under my belt in this series, there have been many many games where I've tried hard & come nowhere even close to having a score worth posting.  I tend to be competitive and, when I like a game, I'll really spend time on it.  (Strangely, that's most of the usage that my MAME cab gets these days--the biweekly contents...)  I'm sure that none of my best scores on even my best games comes close to anything that would be posted on Twin Galaxies, & I really have little/no interest in competing at that level.

I'm tempted to play Metal Slug & post a score in that thread--as in all these threads, I'm totally clueless as to what a good score even is, but if I post a high score, I might ruffle some feathers...I like keeping feathers all pressed down & neat & orderly.

Thanks,
-Jason

GV-

I think very simply & leap before I look.  A thread for Metal Slug appears & I say "Ooooh, shiny!  I want to play that too!"  I love the Metal Slug series & will gladly pick it should I win this series in the future.  I just love playing games and, if there were 2 competitions going, I'd want to be a part of both of them.  But I agree that 1 competition is plenty--I don't think that the distinction of "pros" & "amateurs" is feasible on BYOAC.

If the concern is that only a few people are picking the games and not the general forum public, then start chiming in, folks.  I always considered the honor of picking & sharing a funky or obscure or beloved game to be the reward of winning this competition, since there's no real monetary or material reward (except when isucamper offers up Ridley Scott movies!).  In my trips through the MAME alphabet, I've jotted down a short list of games that I'm eager to share, and it's so much more fun to share in the form of a competition, where people really play & explore & fight for points, rather than just posting a thread to "Main" & saying "Play these games--I like them."

Meandering ramble over.

Thanks,
-Jason

My concern is mostly the lack of involvement as the competitions have progressed. We seem to have fewer and fewer people playing in these, so I don't see a need to have more than one at a time.

I've at least tried most of the games and usually didn't have a score worth posting. I've only won a single competition, but it's been fun trying the others (except for Krull....you're too hard, stupid game!).

Yes, it would be nice to have more involvement.  Very good point.

In a few competitions, people have posted a score early on & nobody's come close & the competition was therefore deemed "no fun".  That makes sense, but I personally have no idea what a good score is until several people have posted with their scores & thoughts...

In any case, back to the game at hand, there seems to be a fair bit of depth to it & some bonuses & quirks:

- Don't shoot the smooth spaceship or rescue helicopter that meanders lazily across the top of your screen, a la the Space Invaders mothership.  It drops a power-up that gives you a rapid-fire weapon & refills your shield!

- At the "boss" at the end of level 1, you get 10 points per shot for shooting the invisible spot in the middle of the screen, & you get 10 points per shot for shooting the indestructible inchworm in the 2nd level.

there have been many many games where I've tried hard & come nowhere even close to having a score worth posting.

so post it anyways. it's probably better than mine. i've been meaning to get into these competitions, if i can manage to play the game at least a couple hours. and then the score should be posted no matter what. so we can see how *everyone* did.

if people start doing that, and this competition starts using polls with games from several eras represented, then there'd really be no need for another thread? (but of course it's not like anyone can stop one from starting anyway)

A poll for next game would be excellent!  Everyone can at least participate in voting if not getting high scores.

There are a handful of games i don't completely suck at, but they haven't come up yet, but I keep watching.  I've tried most of the games in the competitions, but some I just found very non fun.  The Tutankham one for example, I would not have put quarters into more than once.  But then again some games I would have never tried like The Speed Rumbler, I end up finding a ton of fun, so I guess it just depends on what game types people enjoy most.

Are spinner games on the table, does everyone have one?

Definitely limits the number of eligible players. I had one, it broke, and they are too expensive for me to justify buying another at the moment. The old school guys are more likely to have them than the people who grew up on jamma games, unless they just love Cameltry (which IS awesome).

This is my point, 5 days into the comp and there is only 2 posts for score and one to show a personal high, why is that?  because two days into the comps omeone post 112k.  That kinda ruins it for everyone else, IMO.

Why would it ruin it? Try to get higher...who says any game you pick there isn't someone waiting in the wings that will school everyone else? It has nothing to do with the year of the games as you seem to think. There is always someone who can get a higher score.

From the other high score thread:

Quote
How about the next winner has the following stipulations:

- Has to pick two games from two different genres and two different decades

That way its varied enough.  The winner of each of the two games has to likewise pick a different genre and decade for their pick?

We get some more variety without the need to put up another forum *or* drown ourselves in too many high score threads?

How can I know that my score is good without posting it?  There's no way for the 1st poster to know if he's a "major league" or "little league" player & know if that first score is going to kill the thread before it gains momentum.

I love mh12's suggestion & will take it to heart & follow it: "so post it anyways. it's probably better than mine."

If everybody posts their scores, then people can always have somebody against whom they're competing.  Maybe you're not competing for 1st, but you're at least neck-and-neck with another member & can spur on each other to do better.  Or, if you post your score & explain what did you in, other posters can give you tips & nourish your skills.  Look back to the Frogger competition, my first competition--CrazyKongFan had it in the bag early on, but I persevered & crept my score up & up, with help & encouragement, right up till the end.  That was a lot of fun.

Here's to mh12--I think your suggestion will liven up these threads.

Thanks,
-Jason

The last 43 competitions:
(can't link it as I don't know how. Will fix it when someone no doubt will tell me how)

It's easy, go to the last competition.

Thx that was easy. I clicked on properties of one of the links hoping I could see the structure, but instead there was only the link.

Forgot to "thanks" for all the replays, it looks like my game pick reeeeeealy took off (poor Astro Blaster). Extra special "thx" goes to syph007 for starting the whole mess :whap, and then he posts decent score proving himself that he is in the same league as the rest of participants.

(I'm being only 1/10 serious about it syph007, so don't go on some kind of anti-rant ;) )

Yes, always post the links to the previous threads. I was the first to make the list AND included links and would like to see it continue ;D

Haha.. no worries.  I think I just got lucky, or maybe I was more determined.   I think last night I 'got' part of the fun though, when I had a score close to 90k again it WAS very exciting.. like oh man.. I might beat this.  Time slows a little, senses highten... then some cheap stray bullet takes you out! ARG...

I wasnt trying to stir up so much trouble, but I hadn't even noticed before that the comps did stick to mostly the oldest games.  I think it would be nice to throw a neo geo game in for ex.  Lots of good ones that arent fighters.

This game is so easy! I didn't loose a single ship untill Episode IV. Of course my score don't count, that's why I'm not posting any pictures to prove it.
Also I just found out that Son of phoenix is actually the bootleg and not 99 The last war! For some reason my mame shows it as a parent rom, oh well not gonna change anything now.

The highest MARP score was 1885290 .

Something's fishy there. That game has only 7 levels and there is no bonus for completing the final level. I used cheat to complete the game and it only gave me around 560000, even with 1mil bonus the 800K still seem too high.

I tried to watch the inp file, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to work.

Ah ok... I figured how to watch the INP file.  He for sure did get that score, but by gaming the game.

He got to the last boss without dying and had about 500k.

Then he would beat the boss, and as the boss was dying would get hit with a final stray bullet.. this killed him but gave him enough points to get another free life.  Then he got to beat the boss again and again and again....

I took a screenshot of him dying while beating the boss.. he already has 1 million at that point..... Well now I know... course I still havent got past level 3. :D

I downloaded the files beside the highscore, then ran whatever the windows mame plus exe was.  Under File there is an open input file option, that worked for me.
