maybe i should turn the whole button pad left a few degrees...

How about snes? gamecube, dreamcast, wii, and nintendo ds all have no more than 7 buttons, which is how many buttons my pane has.

n64, ps1, ps2,sega saturn etc seem to have too many buttons for playing on a cab. If I wanted to use some of these systems for shmups, 2d platformers, and fighters I wonder if it would matter much if I left out L2 and R2 for ps1 and 2, left ouf the shoulder buttons for sega saturn, and n64 has wayy too many buttons.  But for fighters, platformers, and shmups I Imagine I can get away with leaving out Z, up c an dright C

Ginsu Victim:
I play plenty of PSX games on my cab. The ones that play well on it don't need more than 6 buttons.

Usually a good fighting PS1 game with have the L1 set to be the same as R1 and the same for L2 and R2.  All you need is R2 and R1.  So you really only need 6 plus a start/select button.

and on the N64 all you will really lack for most games is the C buttons and guess what you have a whole other joystick to your right...  use that for your c buttons.  And if you count the N64 buttons it's only 10 buttons, so if you move the c buttons over then you have enought for 6 button pad.  On good multiplayer games on N64 like Mario Kart, you dont need the c buttons as much.

and about PS2 if you can get that emulator to work on your cab then you are a better man than I.

I still dunno if I should go with 7 buttons or 6 buttons since I will be playing  A LOT of neo geo and a lot of emulators.
Beretta:
my project is far from playable but i will be going with a 6 button layout straight, killer instinct / street fighter (US) basicly.

default will be

123
456

however since i love setting up dip switches and tweaking service menu settings i imagine most games will be reconfigured by hand one the first start up.

example 4 button games will probably be

12
34

instead

a lot of people like the cured layouts these days.. i grew up on straight button layouts so thats what i'll stick with, think it looks better too.

as for the 5,7,8 button debate.. if you're going ot play console emulators 8 buttons would be good, but would rarely be used in mame.. although you could go for a semi authentic neogeo layout.

i think 6 buttons is really probably your best bang for your buck but you gotta decide whats the most important thing to you.. some would say a tasteful 2 or 3 button layout is the way to go, others like to go with the shotgun method.. and tack on about 40 buttons.
