Topgun II wide angle lens hack/mod
« on: April 11, 2010, 10:57:09 pm »
Hi all,

Just got my topgun and have it working for the games that I wanted it to work for and the distance isn't terrible on this computer but gets just a bit too far on my cabinet.

I have read a bit about and seen the youtube videos of people using a wide angle lens for mobile phones to give a better result distance wise.

Has anyone tried this and if so, can you point me to the best or any of the lenses that I could look at buying to do this at home?

I can't find the one people are using and obviously want a decent fit etc and one that others have succesfully used.

Cheers
Dan

i remember starting to look into this a while back, but never got around to purchasing the topguns, and never went any further.  i recall someone saying they used a lense from a playstation 2 eye camera..i'll see if i can find that..

EDIT, i found the message i had, from forum member aljupy   i'd send him a PM..he seemed to have good results with this setup

Yes I did.

The lens were from "EYETOY KINETIC COMBAT"....anyway, most Wide angle lens should work fine.

Here are videos.

my main concern is getting one to fit nicely though I guess I could pop a little blutac around it to help it sit in place.

You dont have the diameter of the eyetoy lens do you? (sorry to be a pain)

I would say that those should work fine.

You are not going to find "EYETOY KINETIC" So just grab one of those....it should work.

Also the diameter seems to fit very nice.

First link is just an adapter and not a lens.
The topgun nose is just under 2cm in diameter (20mm) so you need to find a lens that is at least 20mm wide or slightly wider or it just wont fit over the from of the gun, though a smaller one could probably be tacked into place but a bit fiddly.

If you find one that fits nicely let me know

Cheers

[Moderator:  Changed the 200mm dimensions to 20mm since 200mm is 20cm (about 8 inches)]

I just bought a jelly lens since I figure I can probably stretch it over. It only costs $4 sent from Hong Kong so should be here within a week or two (I go away though at the end of next week) but will report back on it as soon as I know.

Not massively impressed with a big green thing on the end of the gun but I will certainly live.

I will keep an eye out for any others too. But will let you know once I have this one whether it works or not, but just be prepared to wait up to 2/3 weeks for your answer. If it arrives before I go on holidays I will test it out straight away, but I get back from holidays then have a week long business trip so if it is not before it will have to be after.

Sorry

Hi Dan,

Yeah I just bought a Jelly thing too.. it says 2cm in Diameter, but we'll see.  I probably won't be able to try it in a while too, but if I have time first i'll let you know how it went for me.

Sometimes those things from hong kong can take a month though.. so we'll see

I also have another idea...a cunning plan if you will.

At lunch time tomorrow I am going to go down to Bunnings (Local massive hardware store) and look around for a "peep hole" for a door see if I can get a cheap one of some sort and large enough.

It has a wide angle lens in it, so i am going to try and work that puppy into it. Means I wont have to wait around for the other one and I can compare results. If this works I will post up how I made the mod later.

Usually you get these for around $10 so could be a relatively cheap fix. I may also go down the local rubbish tip re-use centre on Sunday out of interest to see if I can pick any up cheap there and offer that alternative to anyone too.

So I just got my jelly lens and it worked! OMFG! I didn't think it would work this well... I can play from 3 feet away.

So really briefly (I have to drive 6 hours in a bit so I don't have time for pics or vid), I ordered the jelly lens from the link below.  It came with a little string and cover and sticky gummy thing so it could stick on a cellphone.  I took off the string, cover, and gummy thing put it on the barrel and put tape around it.  It fits perfectly and would look even better if I used some type of glue instead of clear tape. The gun looks like less of a real weapon now and more like a toy (a plus for me), and it doesn't look funky.

from 3 feet away it worked ok, with some calibration i bet I could get it better, but this is way better than before, not perfect but at least now I don't have a reason to buy new guns when ultimarc releases theres (well at least not for a while.. $$ is an issue right now).

Keep in mind if you order from the link below it will take about a month to arrive, but it's free shipping and you can pay with paypal.

I got mine but only briefly tried them out as my taxi to the airport turned up just as I got into the first scene of buck hunter :)

I have a 38inch cabinet and I was able to calibrate from about 1 foot closer, however I left the gummy stuff on and didn't get around to getting it closer to the actual camera.

I expect that the fact mine is sitting additional to the barrell and not closer meant my results were not as good. I am going to try and change it as you have yours and will post my results once done

Hey. Dunno if you ask still frequent here but how did you get on with the jelly lens long term?
It seems impossible to find proper dimensions for phone lenses and I'd rather get it right first time. Does anyone know of a modem product that would suit a top gun 1?
