You can't define what games are in a genre based on if the game if popular or whether or not you liked it. While ID made great FPS games, it is not they they magically thought of the idea themselves and anyone and everyone else was just a copycat. There were a lot of FPS games that came out before, during and after Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Maybe not as fun of games, but the games were not invented with rainbow magic.

The fact that even AFTER Doom, other copycats couldn't get something as simple as proper controls right says a lot about what Carmack and Romero accomplished.

That's absurd, Doom is a copycat. It most certainly is NOT the first FPS. Even within Ids own doors. And proper controls? There's no Y axis in the game. Why do you think I made the comment about the neck brace?

Doom is not perfect. It refined what already existed and combined others. It's merely an evolutionary step in a long lineage of that genre. So Carmack released it in 1993 to the detriment of networks everywhere. That's his billing, nothing more, nothing less. If it wasn't for Carmack someone else would have figured it out eventually.

It is, once again, the successful Uncle of the genre. Not the God of all FPS of all time.

So Duke Nukem came out today. Anybody get it yet? Im going to have to wait til tomorrow to get mine.

Mikezilla:
Damn. Damn DAMN. I mean, it wasnt going to take much to impress me considering I just really want to play it cause I loved the first one so much. Hell, as long as it has the jetpack and some damn pipebombs/shrink ray, I dont even care how innovative it is. Yeah, I miss attitude in games. Everyone is so afraid to do stuff now. I think Im going to rent it.

Check it.  Supposedly the first FPS game.  Has 2 linked PCs.  Game said to have been created 1973 on wikipedia.. but this guy says software is stating 1979.

Back in the day, I used to play a FPS-Like game on the C64 called "Invaders of the Lost Tomb"  (called Scarabaeus elsewhere)  which has a FPS style Dungeons. (though you cant shoot)

Sega Master System also had Phantasy Star, which has FPS maze dungeons too.

FPS isnt really anything special.  Its simple 3d.   The controls it uses isnt special either.  The mouse has been around for a long time.  Same for any analog controller.

Most games that were programmed before Doom didnt have the technology to pull off what it accomplished without it being way too slow, clunky, etc.

Personally, I thought Wolfenstein was kinda fun, but FPS games grew wary and boring quickly.  The gameplay is pretty much slow, monotonous (I dont find getting lost in mazes fun), and not very challenging.
