They do not want you perusing content you did not purchase from them.  Everything you've griped about is something you could enjoy without paying them their toll, so it isn't happening.

I get that.  But it's absurd.  I'm obviously commenting on the device vis-a-vis a consumer.  Imagine if the iPod would not play MP3 files -- it would only play music you buy from iTunes.  It would be absurd.  Even if Apple has everyone so gaga over their ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- now that it makes good business sense, it is absurd from a consumer point of view -- even if most consumers are too gaga to realize it.

You hit upon an ipad problem I noticed, no AVI support either. So many of the vids on my file server I cant even sync with the ipad as most of them are in formats other than mp4. I "could" handbreak all of my vids, but that would take years and lower the quality of all my vids... There really is no excuse for not supporting all of the major formats and standards...

shmokes:
And the pat answer, that h.264 is better is ---smurfing--- absurd.  So what?  There are probably a dozen compression methods that are better than mp3.  Maybe you should pull mp3 support from the next version of the iPhone.  I understand why Apple does this, but understanding why your wife's lover stabbed you in the throat and left you to bleed to death on the sidewalk doesn't make it suck any less.

Years ago, I bought an 80gb Ipod.  Cost me a boatload, but I figured since
it was so expensive, it would last longer.

   Immediate Suckage:

1) No clip or way to hold the device
2) Too Easy to scratch
3) Would not work with win98.  Even had trouble with XP... had to go thru
all sorts of hoops to make it work in windows.
4) Touch Wheel cant be adjusted with Gloves on.  Have to use nose to adjust
volume most of the year here in Upstate NY.
5) Battery not easily replaceable.
6) Nearly tore the touch wheel off when I brushed a table corner
7) Cant make a custom EQ, & most their settings are absolute Crap.
8 ) No good games available.
9) Almost no buttons, and you need several accessories to even use the thing.

  Horrific Suckage:

The 3mm thick rubber shell I bought for it, had a clip failure.  The device slid
down my leg, flew off at my knee, and hit the floor.  A tad more than a mere
Foot... encased in a thick rubbery shell, and it ceased to operate correctly.

Owned less than 1yr.  (11 months)  Went to Apple to check the Warranty.
Apple claims my device was out of warranty, because it sat on the shelf
for a month or more.  Seems they dont count when you bought the thing.

After jumping thru hoops on their website, I find out that it will take about
$300 to fix the device!

Yeah right!  I feel like driving to Apple to shove the device up Steves Rear end.

The HD is shot, and I probably could get a replacement... but thankfully,
Ive now got a Sony 16gb  player, which has a custom 5 band EQ, with
custom level  non-deforming/distorting bass boost.   No moving parts.
has like a 48 hr battery life!  REAL BUTTONS to navigate effortlessly, even with
glove on! :)   Voice recorder. Radio. And much more... for a mere $130.
(probably less now)   No config headaches. No need for custom software to use it.

Apple can Byte Me.  Ill never buy a thing from them ever again.

If I want a tablet, Ill buy a Real Tablet. One that actually can Do things,
and has some actual buttons and ports on the thing.  One you can actually
Easily replace a battery on.  One that has a stylus, and not that crappy
Touch interface. One that has an actual keyboard.

Supposedly the Ipads are in short supply, so maybe you can offload the
Pile to another fool.

shmokes:
Whoa there tiger . . .

While we're digging WAY into the past there Xiau, I should share some horrible experiences I had with Windows 95. Holy cow was that a piece of crap. Crashing all the time. DirectX was running games in a WINDOW and wouldn't full screen without keeping window widgets and frame visible. It wouldn't connect to the internet without some weird configurations of something called TCPP?

Anyways. That was it!! Never buying a Microsoft product EVER SINCE THEN!! Why? Because products can NEVER get better, and companies can NEVER redeem themselves! Nope, no way!
