I've used Vinyl Depot a couple of times, both black and woodgrain vinyl - can definitely recommend them for UK builders.

Can you tell me how it compares with Fablon?

I'm pretty sure it's the same to all intents and purposes, just a different brand. I had no problem applying it, so long as your surface is smooth. All you need is a straight edge - a length of smooth wood or a metal metre rule - I've used both. Have a look in my sig for the Tron Mini with woodgrain vinyl, or the Mystery Machine with black vinyl, both DC-Fix from Vinyl Depot.

Hmmm, I don't normally go for the fake wood grain look but I have to say it looks damn good from the pictures. Maybe I'll have to reconsider. I wish I'd known about this stuff when I build my first control panel. I painted the sides with some awful paint that I got from B&Q which never seems to dry properly. Vinyl would have looked much more professional and would have involved less work as well.
Did you apply the vinyl to bare wood, or did you apply some kind of sealant or paint first? If the vinyl got damaged, I'd like to be in a position to just peel it off and apply another roll.

You need to prime first, yes. I used MDF primer as the cab is MDF. The better you sand it the better the vinyl will look - any rough bits will stick out like a sore thumb.
