My period of daily lunchtime Smash T.V. playthroughs in college finally paid off.  :)

I have a short list of games that I wanted to pick:
Irritating Maze would've been my pick, but the game doesn't seem to display scores at all!   :badmood:
Space Zap is great, but my arms already hurt after playing so much Smash T.V. this week...
Until I get new guns & make sure my "mouse" assignments are all squared away, I don't want to mess with any spinner games, so...it's..............

Rygar!!!  Always thought this was a great run & jump & yo-yo game.  Lots of variety, good difficulty level, lots of bonuses to juggle (kill more bad guys, pick up more stuff, or get a time bonus...what's best???).

Default dip switch settings (at least in MAME 115), which do NOT match Twin Galaxies' settings

----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: rygar

Lives: 3
Extra Lives @ 50,000 - 200,000 - 500,000
Difficulty: Easy  NOTE THAT TWIN GALAXIES USES MEDIUM PLEASE--CHECK YOUR DIPS BEFORE COMPETING!!!

----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Sunday April 4th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2010.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

Good luck!

-Jason

Hmmm ... a highscore comp where I could actually be a contender. I'll have to get that monitor properly converged on my Rygar. Or, more likely, I won't and will just tell myself that I could have been a contender.

Nice choice of game -- one of my all-time favourites and the machine I have played more than any other since I started collecting.

Hey everybody-

It's a good thing that we're not playing Euchre here, because I'm going to renege--sorry if this makes me unpopular.

But, after playing many games on the "normal" skill level, the game seems just too frantic & fast-paced & less fun.  One of my favorite bits about Rygar is the creativity of the subsequent levels & wanting to explore & get farther.  That's waaaay easier on the "easy" skill level than the "normal" skill level, where baddies are much more plentiful & much faster.

So, I'm altering the original post to change the difficulty level to "easy", straying from Twin Galaxies' settings.

Nobody's submitted a score yet, so nobody should be upset.....I hope.....  ;D

Thanks,
-Jason

PS--there will be a prize for this game--not yet sure what...a joystick, a Nintendo cartridge, a...???   ???

Here's a good FAQ site: http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Rygar/Table_of_Contents

And here's a good (I think?) score to start off the competition (attached).

Thanks,

This game kicks my butt, so I sat out (though I said the same thing about Ghouls n Ghosts and I somehow won that competition).

Now I really wish I'd taken a pic of my 550k score on my Rygar before I sold it. :(

Haven't come close to that on my MAME machine; so many other games..!

Didn't mean to scare everybody off--I didn't have any reference point of whether my score is good or not...I've been playing a bunch & haven't been able to improve--I'm getting better at nailing the 10k timer/score bonus at the end of each level.  I've had a few games where I got my 50k & 200k & icon free guys without dying & then choked horribly after that.  There are still some parts where I inevitably lose a guy too...

But I'm having fun, so I'll keep playing!

I've had a few games like that too jason, I'm up to about 360k with a lot of games around 300k. I finally beat that "boss" at the end of the 4th or 5th lvl without dying. I had 300k with all my lives left with 4/5 power ups then died 4 times in a row on one level!

I'll catch you though!

Ooooohhhh, SNAP!!!   ;D

Had me a good game.  For probably the 1st time ever, I got through the level where the dudes jump out of their huts down on your head......and then I blew a life at the end, getting the timer bonus.  And then I blew another life killing time at that very same spot.

Things went well for a while, & then I got to level 11, where those dudes with the coiled-up loooong arms socked me in the kisser almost immediately.  I totally forgot about those dudes.  Duh.  OK, I'm going to chill on the Rygar for a bit now...

-Jason

PS--I guess I got so excited that I forgot what my middle initial was...spaz...

Ah, Rygar, the only game I ever beat on one quarter.

Levels 12 and 16 are the hard ones.

Personal best 2.08 million.

How long do we have to submit scores?

Hey, you guys *are* playing on easy level, aren't you?

Actually, I got my 360k on my first day of playing, back before you changed it to easy. I was pretty frustrated for a while that after changing it to easy I couldn't crack 300k. Oh well, looks like Cakemeister is running away with this one. Good pick though, didn't know of Rygar before this.

D'oh!

It's not the 1st time that I've been calendarically challenged...

Darn, when the top score was 744k, I was considering giving a few more tries tonight--with some luck, I could beat that.

But 1.4M?  Not a chance.  I cry "uncle"!

Just caught this post - a little late - and MUST add my US $0.02 here.  I *LOVE* this game.  I recall having played this with a guy I used to play lacrosse with in high school, and he used to kick my @$$ every time.  He too could finish the game on one quarter (Cakemeister, is that YOU?)  ;-)

One of the main reasons for my love of this game are the sheer number of secrets.  It definitely gives Super Mario Bros. a run for its money in that department, and the game mechanics are spot-on.  One of my top five all-time favorite arcade games.  Bravo for this pick!  Sorry I missed the competition.  My top score is something like 450k, but that's on normal mode.

I was in college when the game came out in 1986. I played it instead of studying.

I had never known about the 1 million point bonus on level 13. I definitely need to work on getting that.
