I have been waiting and watching for about 10 years and I FINALLY got a good deal on a Cliff Hanger cab.  It's a Crowns Golf right now, but has potential....

$200 was a great price to me....

So are you going to use a PC with Daphne running, or are you doing a full restore and using the real Laserdisc system?

Oh yes, Japan animation.  The original game was a peice of S__T.  The disc would freeze about halfway through and you had to kick the game to keep it running.  From what I heard, Stern gave up on the cab and sold them all to the maker of Crown Golf.  They still have the original overspray colors on the inside.  "Supposively" it is a highly collectable cab...I don't know or care...just glad to have one...

Wow, can't believe that guy spent all that time doing that. I wonder how the Mame version compares to his?

I just got ahold of The Castle of Cagliostro this weekend. One of the few remaining Miyazaki films I haven't seen.

The original laserdisc (used in Mame) is aweful!  It looks like it was projected onto a white wall when captured for the the laserdisc video.  The remake is 1000% better and got me excited to play the game again....if you can find it (PD) get it and run in Daphne....Unbelievable....

One question I've had about running this game in MAME and Daphne. 

How come the MAME version seems to have extra scenes?  For instance, when you die, it show a guy getting lynched, but the Daphne version does not.

$200 is about you being a legal thief in the night for something with a working monitor.

I paid $400 for the original strikers 1945 i always wanted, minus the jamma board, (since i already had one i let the seller keep it) It came with a "working" monitor, That still doesnt work. I had my chassis restored by a very well known and reputable monitor guy, for $125, and i got it back and all of the strange graphics glitches disappeared. But the damn monitor is still way way too dark and the best news i got from the boss is that my tube is toast.

I will never again buy a cabinet with a working monitor unless it is complete and working 100%.

otherwise, i would have given him $200 for the nice cab, and seriously looking into and exploring my option to buy a makvision hybrid Vga monitor brand new. If i didnt lose the extra $200 on the original purchase, Plus $125 to repair the chassis, i would have already had a working vertical beast that was complete.

Instead, i am using my old 17" lcd monitor that came with our computer 6 years ago.

Meanwhile the first one i built from scratch about 6 years ago has a 25" Makvision vga hybrid, so i do know the difference. I bought that monitor brand new with warranty and it hasnt even hiccuped in 6 years.

In my opinion, unless you see something running brightly in all of its brilliance, Avoid the hel out of it and stick with good, clean cabinets that dont come with a screen. another thing to consider is that Even if you do get a cabinet with a working monitor, you are still dealing with 15, 20, or more year old Junk when you really think about it. How much longer will it last, who knows.

Also, looking at that guy's sight more, it doesn't look like he's got any HD encodes working with Daphne, if I'm understanding him.

Yes, the option was available at the arcade to switch the hanging scene on and off...

True, the HD version doesn't work....yet.....
BUT, the down-converted video he made from original HD source is by far the best way to play it. 
Has anyone else find it and try it....you will not be dissapointed!

I haven't played the remastered version yet, but the original arcade version as I recall, looked kinda muddy and dark just like the Daphne version.

Daphne and Mame both use the original laser disc which is very muddy.  The remastered versions is made frame by frame from a DVD/Blue-ray source.  MUCH BETTER!  Daphne will play the remastered version, but Mame will not.  Mame is emulating the original version which is what Mame was intended to do.

But the remastered version is very cool!!!

Very nice indeed.  Cliff Hanger was my Holy Grail before I realized how difficult it would be to fully restore (finding a cabinet, getting a laser disc, a working LD player, etc).  Just finding a cabinet is commendable.  Congratulations on your find and good luck with the restore/mameing.

The original Cliff Hanger cabinets were blue and pink in color (see link). They also had chrome T-Molding on the cabinets which look to be intact and in good condition on yours.

I have the updated Cliff Hanger 2009 restoration running on my Mame cab in Daphne and it is much better quality then the original.  No dark and murky scenes, everything is very clear.  Definitely worth seeking out if you want to play this laser disc game.

So are you planning to repaint the cabinet to match the original?  Any idea on the color codes for the paint colors?  Please keep us informed of the process and and your plans.

The Cliff Hanger I used to play as a kid was in a Chuck E. Cheese on Long Island.  Now this was the early 80's so they were a little cooler back then.  They actually had a lot of true arcade games at the time and not just those silly ticket redemption games.  Spent many summer days in there playing Cliff Hanger, Donkey Kong, Burger Time, Galaga, etc.

So where the original colors showing inside the cabinet?  Any pictures for us to see?

Some colors on the inside, but I have to completely rebuild the front of the cab to move over the coin door, make an access panel, and a laser disc door.

There is a few versions of Dragons Lair aswell as a HD one.

The original Cliff Hanger quality is terrible its amazing that someone actully 'passed' it for prodution. Like the resoration site says it looks like they just pointed a camera at the film playing on another tv!

Im quite a Cliff Hanger fan myself. Id never heard of it untill I got Daphne, but it didnt work (its been taken off) so I got the remastered version (its great). I have been toying with the idea of a Cliff Hanger themed cab for a while.

Anyone know of any vectorised artwork out there?

Cliff Hanger works on the Daphne build I use - check around as there are some customised versions out there.

Nice! Cliff Hanger was the first laser game I played - LOVED IT!  Its still one of my guilty pleasures.  I spent hours setting up Daphne specifically to play it
