Currently re-watching the entire run of Sopranos.

I watch the Sorpranos re-runs whenever I catch them. I just loaned my sets out to a buddy for his wife to watch last week.  HBO seems to push the envelope a lot more than regular networks.  I've heard Showtime does too but I dont have it.

Looks like direct to video to me.

The same thing has been happening in all areas of entertainment...

First it started out with music.

I actually think music is making a bit of a comeback.  Bittorrent is killing the traditional model.  It's getting a lot harder to just put out some produced prepackaged crap and sell 10 million albums.  Successful bands are being forced to tour more, rather than just throw out an album and do a short 20-city tour every two years and then live off millions and millions of dollars in album sales.  Now they have to work a little bit for their money.  And the same goes for studios.  They seem a lot more interested in exploiting the indy scene and plucking some of the best out of obscurity.  Hopefully things keep moving in this direction.

Not at all.   People are willing to pay for good music.. but they are Not willing
to pay what the record companies are asking.

Firstly, the ---daisies--- have been slowly compressing the music to hell... ruining its
sound.  The original reason, was to make the CDs sound louder... but its got
way out of hand...  and now its merely a trick to reduce production costs.  Less
detail means less editing.  Now music on CDs sounds Flat and lifeless.   Ive got cds
from the early 90s that sound 1000x better than the latest cds of today.

Next there is Value.  You can buy an entire Movie for $10 now.  The movie may
have 2.5hrs of material, which includes a full musical score... all in crystal
clear high def surround sound.

Not to mention all the other things people have to spend their money and time
on.  $15 for an crappy CD  (obsolete technology),  that is easily scratched,
contains rootkit malware, is overpriced, poorly produced, sounds terrible...is
Not going to sell well.

Make DVD audio the standard, discs with audio only will be no more than $5.
They will sell like madd.  And, because they are cheaper... people will be more willing
to spend money on trying out a new Artist.

LOL.  Firstly, its rare that people who do not know a band, will go pay to see
them.  But the funny part of what you said... is that a Band is Forced to tour
to make money.   When in fact, the record companies usually have such seedy
contracts with the artists... that they dont make JackCrap selling their music.
Thus, the only way they ever have made money is by touring.

The worst part of it, is that their reps do not promote them.  So, all these fans
who might be interested in seeing them on tour... will miss them cause they
didnt hear a single thing about it.   It pains me to see a monolithic band like
Megadeth play these tiny venues... when they should be filling entire stadiums.

Umm... What is an Original Artists?!   Indi is just another name for unrecognized
talent.  They have been exploiting people since their existence.  And once they
DO wrap their string around the new talent... they will turn them into
useless Mudd by their next album, by forcing them to apply their godawful
generica formula.  Again, much like how Stern takes a designers input,
trashes it.. and forces them to do what He wants instead... because HE
thinks he is right... and He has the money to make that situation.

Bands SHOULD make a good oart of their living by touring. That's what being a musician should be about. But remember, it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll  :)

Talking of which, ACDC are making a stack from touring. They refuse to rely purely on album sales (there is no 'best of ACDC' for instance) and they don't offer content for download. I didn't go to their show here a few weeks ago. But i could hear it quite clearly from maybe 5 miles away. I can say that they've still got it  ;D
