Edit: Just watched the above video. Wow, you get 50k bonus pts for grabbing the fire bombs? Ok, I'm gonna play. :)

Guess you didn't read my post immediately after the game announcement? :P

Hehe, no sorry. I was aware that you got extra points for picking up the bombs in the correct order, but not as much as 50k.

Well indeed you could try different strategy like skipping the hard ones ,for me that's level  7 .
I die there most of the time but I can't hold myself for just ignoring the pattern and finish it ASAP.

Time to fire Up the cab now...

be right back  ;D

:)

close but I'm finally getting the hang of level 7 ,I did a 50k bonus there.
but off course a few stupid mistakes at the first levels.
Anyway I wouldn't have made it when I didn't see the 500K when entering level 11(I kept it cool there , no fancy pattern there just a few more k and i'll be ok  :)  )

back to work bpark42   ;D

It also looks you get  an xtra life at 500k

I don't think you get an extra life at 500k.  I think you just happened to pick up an "E" extra life bonus.

I am almost positive that I am not getting a bonus life at 500k....

Anyhow, I just had a good game but screwed up big time at the end and lost two guys in a row.

These are great scores guys.

I haven't had the time to fire up my cab, doing loads of marking for Monday morning.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to play before the deadline on the 4th, it's gonna be difficult just to get close to those half mill scores.
Cheers Eric

Heh, thanks

Here's an advanced tip that might help some of you guys out:

There are times when there is a "grace period" on an enemy when you can run/jump through them without getting killed.  I'm sure all of you have had the skeleton looking guys fall on top of you and kill you.  This happened to me a lot when I was stuck at the bottom and tried to get out into the clear, but the guys fall too fast.  I finally figured out that when the guys fall and transform you have a second or so where you can just run straight through them.  It's actually much safer to let them drop rather than trying to rush underneath before they fall.  This has saved Jack's bomb-gathering butt many times for me.  ;D

Another tip:

You can control where the mechanical bird appears by holding the joystick in the opposite direction.

Example: Hold the joystick to the right as soon as the round starts and the mechanical bird appears on the left of the screen. If the stick is held diagonally, the bird appears in the opposite corner.

Check this out:

It's crude and lacks sound, but you get the idea.  This is an INP recording I found on the net.  The guy scored over 6 million, but I stopped the video at around 1 million.

The 16 million point game I mentioned over at TG, the INP is available for viewing. You have to have WolfMAME 106 installed, but that shouldn't be a big deal. I have about a dozen different MAME versions installed, each in their own directory. I just point the ROM directory to one location so I don't need a set for each version. You wanna see some good point pressing, watch that one :) He had 481K at the end of level 5 and 924K at the end of level 10.

Just had another go, a little improvement this time but it's still embarassing compared to mr. 600k+ above (and at least compared to those scoring millions)  :P. ;)

Anyways, I have no time at all to play so this would be my last submission for now I think. :)

I got a chance to view it.  Nice.  What I noticed from both players though, is that there were some levels where they didn't go for all the lit bombs for the bonus points on levels 11, 12, 13 and 14.  I wonder why they do this.  There has to be a strategic reason.

I haven't watched any of the videos or recordings posted because I am stubborn about wanting to figure patterns and such out for myself, but I will say that I can understand not going for the bonuses on those levels.  11 and 12 are extremely difficult to get the bonuses on (I don't remember 13 or 14 all that well since I have only played them a few times.)  I've gotten the full bonuses on 11 and 12 several times, but I learned that I had to be willing to abandon the lit bombs and just go for a fast clear if things turned bad.

12 can be difficult to complete without dying even if you don't go for the bonus.  Really, it can end up being all about when you get the "P" coins during the level and how well you are able to use them.  I have passed on the bonus on 11 many times because I wasn't set up to get the "P" near the beginning

Yeah, he definitely knows the boards, so on ones he isn't going after the firebomb bonus, I'm sure it's because it's too hard to do safely ;D I watched it all the way thru once before (turning off speed throttling) and he rolled the level meter several times (at 100)

Last day everyone, hope you're having fun :) bpark42 is currently in the lead with 664K, can anyone top him in the next 15 hours? I haven't played much, but I've never been very good at this one, so I doubt I can come anywhere near you guys getting over 500K.

Workin' on it, 477k is my best so far

It's funny because until MAME I never played Bombjack, but I had played Mighty Bombjack on the NES when I was a kid.  The NES game borrowed heavily from the arcade game sound and general-concept wise, but it was an adventure game where you travelled through rooms, not fixed to a single screen.

Congrats to bpark42, who came in first with 664,160. Since you won, you get to pick the next game :) You can start your own thread, or if you like, I can do it (since I've started the last few threads for others, I've got the hang of it :D )

Thanks everybody.  I really got into this game.  It was a great pick!

Anyhow, I have a game in mind, but I am open to suggestions.  I know there are tons of great games out there like this that I have never played before, so I am willing to hold off a day or so before posting the new thread.  Post 'em if you got 'em!  No guarantees I will change my mind though.  ;D

What's the "official" rule for a disappering 1st place winner? Is it 2nd place winner picks within certain amount of time?

Btw my vote for next game is for '99 The last war (clone of son of phoenix, but that's how I remember that game) That's going to be my choice one of these days (if I ever win again)
