ROMSet: Pengo
Bonus Life: 30000
Cabinet: Upright
Lives: 5
Rack Test [Cheat]: Off
Difficulty: Medium
Special Rules: None

- One credit only.

- No continues! (I don't think Pengo allows them anyway)

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Wednesday February 17th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2010.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

Note: Default is 3 men to start, I chose 5 to coincide with TG's settings, in case anyone wants to record and submit (make sure you use WolfMAME 106 if you do). I also chose the parent ROM, even though I actually prefer the one with the regular music instead of Popcorn music. Most of the other games so far have used the parent ROM (except Black Dragon)

Good luck!

Scoring
The point award for crushing Sno-Bees depends on the number crushed in one push of an ice block:

400 for 1 Sno-Bee
1,600 for 2 Sno-Bees
3,200 for 3 Sno-Bees
6,400 for 4 Sno-Bees
Walking over a stunned Sno-Bee awards 100 points.

10,000 points are awarded for aligning the three diamond blocks together if at least one is not touching a wall, but only 5,000 if all are against the walls.

Crushing an ice block will award 30 points, or 500 points if it contains a Sno-Bee egg.

A bonus is awarded upon round completion, depending on time elapsed:

5,000 points for under 20 seconds
2,000 points for between 20-29 seconds
1,000 points for between 30-39 seconds
500 points for between 40-49 seconds
10 points for between 50-59 seconds
0 points for 60 seconds or more

This game is fun...and hard. I remember having an old dos version of this back in the day.  This one is a lot better.  A little over 22k is my best so far.

Haha, last night I dreamt I completed this game with a score of 1500.  I'm sure I can do better in real life.

This is one of those games where the default high score is almost unreachable!  It's not as bad as Burger Time though - the default score in that one is like 28,000 and I can barely top 10,000.  I think I'm missing some aspect of the scoring though...

Getting the dreaded first post out of the way...  8)

This game is fun, but very frustrating.  I played for a while last night and topped out around 27,000, but I just realized I was using only 3 lives so I will have to give it another go tonight.

These competitions are a great idea.  Just looking through the old competitions got me to play a bunch of games I had never even heard of.

Yeah, I set it to 5 lives for TG submissions, since they use 5 instead of 3 for some reason (it's also one of the reasons I picked the parent ROM with the Popcorn music, which I don't care for...supposedly that version is also easier too!) Of course, to submit, you need to record the INP and use WolfMAME 106, but that's pretty easy to do. I usually record the game when I'm playing, you never know if you have a breakout game (like I did with Popeye and Klax)

First go at it with 5 lives...

I screwed up early and missed a couple bonus opportunities.

Here's my first entry, 59330. I got to level 5 (maybe 6) on my first guy then lost 3 or 4 men in a row trying to line up the diamond blocks :banghead:

Tough tough game--I got in the hi 30s on my 1st 2 tries.

I used to own this but never played it enough to figure it out.

Ack, the music on this version is weird!

Control can be tricky.

OK, enough complaining.

It's still a classic & a great pick.  If I have time & patience, I'll have a go at it, but I'd probably just rather refine my Popeye skills...  =D

If you guys do BOMB JACK next I'm totally in.  I've recently discovered this gem of a game and I can't stop playing it (that and Mr. Do of course).

Nice one.  I got kind of sick of this game because I played it so much in the first few days of the competition, but I guess I need to give it another go.

24 hours left, will anyone unseat MazzMn? I haven't played it lately, but gonna give it a few more goes before tomorrow night. I've had a little higher on a real machine (not running this romset though), but doubt I'll beat it (and if I do, 2nd place will get the next pick anyway) Good luck!

Message to the 2nd place winner:  Please highly consider "Bomb Jack" as the next game.  Super fun to play and it's old school.  :)

Last minute entry for me :) 104,570. Included is a screenshot and a zipped INP (done with WolfMAME 106)
BTW: MazzMn, I love your helper. I can see my cat doing the same thing if I let her in the basement (I have my cocktail DK down there)

Congrats CrazyKongFan! that's a great score   :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:
I tried a bit more this week hoping to break 100000 but no luck.
I also checked out BombJack and I'm up for trying out a new game, it works on my machine but I really don't remember ever playing this one before, it has possibilities.

Love pengo.

Was wondering why it popped up now.
It was an old competition.
